Lecture 10: Treatment of Common Contaminants
You should now be aware of the biological technologies available to remediate contaminated water, sludge & soils. One remaining objective is to enhance your understanding by showing examples of the systems in practice. You should notice how they can be combined with other processes (biological and non-biological) to optimise the remediation required.
For completeness, you will learn two biological approaches that are effective at remediating the inorganics and metals that have not yet been considered…genetically engineered microorganisms and phytoremediation!!
Learning Objectives:

For completeness, you will learn two biological approaches that are effective at remediating the inorganics and metals that have not yet been considered…genetically engineered microorganisms and phytoremediation!!
Learning Objectives:
- Applications of treatment strategies (e.g.for fuels, VOCs & explosives)
- The remediation of metals by genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs).
- Phytoremediation (principle & processes).
- Advantages & disadvantages of each.
